This is currently the best way I have found to do it, but I still have a lot of trouble. My finger slips and it just doesn't want to slide unless I apply a lot of pressure, which leaves me relieved every time when I finally get it out that I didn't break (at least this time) the sim card innards in the process.
I might try this again with an eraser though.
