After many hours of work....finally...got it working...slow as molasses in winter though :(

I am using a Dell D600 with all sorts of kaywrap installed, its a work machine. I did two things to get the modem to finally show up in teh phone and modems area of the control panel...using windows 2000.
1) uninstalled all BB software and removed all Research In Motion entries in the registry just to be sure
2) I shut off all non needed services in windows. This included virus scan tools as well as various other things my company installs, marimba, novel, etc.
After that I re-installed the BB software and voila!
