John, don't you want her to try and back up the existing address book by itself first??
I would goto the Advanced in the Desktop Manager and backup just the address book first. If your able to backup the address book, then clear the address book and re-import. This will reindex and fix the error if your able to just backup the address book by itself, clear and re-import.
She probably has an indexing problem or table error conflict. Usually when that happens the DM will just close without an error.
