This is particularly true if you have OS 4.5. 4.2 doesn't support HTML emails which is why I got the gmail app to begin with. When I was able to successfully install 4.5, the HTML email worked great and thus no need for the app.
That being said, I don't use labels in gmail. The gmail app will let you label items and view by label.
