It depends on your plan. I used to have the 10MB plan that is no longer available. It could do BES and BIS. I got screwed by Vzw when upgrading to Storm and they switched me to the unlimited plan for $45. The $29 plan for "personal" email will not allow BES connectivity - you will get a service error if you try. I tried to go back to the 10MB plan for $25 but they won't let me.

BTW - If you are on a BIS plan, the device will activate with BES when USB connected, but as soon as you disconnect USB you lose BES connectivity.
