My suggestions is only that and do so at your own risk. My guess is there is corrosion between the metal tab and the contact on the circuit board. if you take your battery out, remove the trackball and CAREFULLY pry the tab up just enough to look under you can probably take a small metal object and scrap it off the contact, do not touch anything but the contact itself.

I have done this on a friends phone to correct the same issue.
