This absolutely worked for me too - on corporate enterprise server. Once I cleared ALL the entries in the "default device" calendar, which included "g"oing to the year 2099 and deleting all the recurring appointments (anniversaries etc) the calendar finally disappeared entirely. Apparently it goes away once empty.
