The phone is covered under a 1 year warranty from RIM, so if it's less than a year old, get it swapped out at your local AT&T store.

Failing that, you could go to AT&T and request a new SIM card. It won't cost you anything, but it also might not have any effect either. I've never seen the problem you describe so I'm not sure what else to recommend.
