I don't see it mentioned in your post, but did you ever run ScanPST.exe on your PST files? That utility does work at repairing normal PST corruption/errors. It may have had a chance and fixed the corrupt entries, just not promising anything.
Note: Typically when PST files get 1.4-1.6 GB they begin to corrupt themsevles. (Granted I've seen PST's in the 10 GB Range work fine, but that's MS for you.)
