Default BB Desktop / Internet Access Conflict

I just got a new laptop and am trying to get my BB to synch. Installed Desktop software (4.7) - once installation was completed, unable to pull up application (locked up). Couldn't connect to BB. Discovered I had also lost internet access. Laptop wouldn't shut down cleanly - had to do a hard shut down. Since then, I've tried:

Installing versions 4.2, 4.5

Tried to synch with BB and got the forever rotating hour glass. Had to reformat BB and reinstall software.

Uninstalling Roxio and Installing 4.6

Desperately need some advice and help!
