I haven't had any success with Email on the VZW network for hours. The "Email Settings" application will not initialize most of the time ("your device encountered a problem with this application's server"). OCCASIONALLY the email settings app will launch and I try to reenter one email account password to sort of force update it, and I get the same error message.

no way RIM is not having some sort of problem right now.
