An OS is "official" with a carrier, once that carrier tests it, and decides to release it.

RIM does not release OS's to the general population, but rather to the carriers. They can approve or not, depending on their results testing with their product line.
Treat your password like your toothbrush. Don't let anybody else use it, and get a new one every six months.
