Default Pearl 8100 Trackball Issues..

Just a few hours ago, my trackball stopped scrolling downwards. As usual, I attempted the process of taking it out and cleaning the metal underneath as well as the ball itself, spraying with compressed air, and even pressing down on the ball to no avail. Luckily for me though, my warranty expired last month so my options are either a) Pay $350 for another pearl, b) Pay $470 for a Curve 8900 (which I want to upgrade to but lack the funds as of now), or c) just deal with my now defunct phone for another year until the contract expires. I've attempted all of the usual things to the point of both of my thumbs being sore (for which after their recovery I'll attempt again) but I was wondering what other possible tips/tricks I could try with it. I noticed that the ball itself seems to be fully rotational when out of the phone but unable to scroll downwards when it is inside of it but also able to go downward when inserted in the reverse way. For a while the cursor even slightly moved downwards with a bit of effort but now not at all..I'm considering trying out a new trackball(since its obviously a much cheaper possible solution) but I'd still like to see what I could do otherwise.
