From all I can tell, the minimum needed depends on your apps and themes and what you have running at the same time. Some get by on relatively little available RAM compared to others. Start getting rid of some stuff and freeing up some memory so you get up to 10+ MB free and see what happens. If that doesn't help, try 12-15MB free.
