The times the unsubscribe link has worked for me is when it's obvious the sender got my email from an affiliated organization, like political or charitable org's. Some of the borderline spam from retailers has been hit and miss. I've never clicked on the unscribe link in the rest for the reason stated by jsconyers. On the whole, I auto-send 99% of it to the junk folder and don't even try the unsubscribe link.
