I successfully tethered my 9700 via USB last night... The key was getting BDM for Mac... of course, I stumble on this thread AFTER struggling for a few days! ;) lol (the key for me was getting BDM... was trying without it before.... had the BB modem file (the old one with 8100/8700/8800)... could get BT tethering to work without BDM... but not USB... now with BDM installs... works great via USB!!!
i did notice though, that either have BDM running, and/or having the SD card mounted while trying to USB tethered, would results in crashing my 9700 a few seconds after successfully connecting... so keeping mass storage OFF and also setting BDM to not start automatically when hooking up my BB did the trick...
I'm glad I didn't have to spend $20 just to tether... this is why macs rock (and T-mobile too! - they don't lock down their devices like some other providers *cough* verizon *cough* seem to do... :p )
