It's all about the cloud, perhaps you've heard of it. I don't know too many people that use Outlook without Exchange anymore. Most don't want their contacts, mail and calendar locked up on one computer with Outlook. And you don't have to use Windows Live, the activsync in WP7 will work with gmail and google calendar as well.
