oddly enough, it appears to be working properly now. webpages finally resolve and i'm able to surf the internet normally. in a medium reception area, i'm running ~35kbps down and ~8kbps up. i haven't changed anything since my last test (when i posted here initially)...it just works. while i'm not sure that this was actually an issue, the t-mobile tech insisted that i install the modem as a "Standard 56000 bps Modem" instead of the "Motorola USB Modem", as sugggested by the forum. other than that, the instructions on the forum here are flawless. thanks again for the help.
