Sounds like you've tried -- and your friend must have shown you what he/she did. What exactly isn't working like you think it should? Are you saying when you start BBM and then open the menu you do not see "View My Profile" or something like that?

To see what version you are running, open options > advanced options > applications (or it may be options > applications) and find BlackBerry Messenger and see what the version is that is installed.
