To be precise, yes Google is independent of RIM as a corporate entity, but as Dubdub says, many third-party apps for BlackBerry are written to take advantage of the BlackBerry data service features and hence require a BlackBerry data plan.

And what the others say about the various Google products has been my understanding. If you are able to use the current Google Maps, for instance, without a BlackBerry data plan, then you are the exception.
