The "something along those lines" might be helpful to zero in on the problem.
If your "bolt on" is indeed a full BlackBerry data plan, and if it is associated with your handset, you should be good to go. You may want to verify before you waste time.
Next step would be to do a hard rest on the handset. With the power on, remove the battery for at least 30 seconds. Replace the battery and then try again after the device boots up. Do that and see what happens.
