Angry Update Bricked my Bold

Now 27 hrs into the update that 'may take an hour.'

Yesterday (2011.08.07) started BlackBerry Desktop to get a file back from a backup. Seemed simple enough. Oh look - a new version of Desktop (6.1). Got that. Oh look - a new device update do I want that? Sure!

But wait - Desktop needs ANOTHER update before it can actually update my device. Got THAT. Started device update AGAIN.

Hangs at "net_rim_bb_phone_resource.cod." After 4 hrs of that, tried all manner of soft resets, hard resets, reboots, re-downloading software - NOTHING HELPED.

This morning decided to re-install my previous device package. STILL HANGS AT "net_rim_bb_phone_resource.cod."

I'm travelling in 3 days and I really need a phone, not a lovely paper weight.

There was not much in my "vendor.xml" file but I deleted (renamed, actually) it anyway, per one of the FAQ's. Disabled "AutoUpdate" everything.

Tried to search for solutions specific to "net_rim_bb_phone_resource.cod" but that's too long for the search function to handle.

So now I'm stuck and NOT HAPPY.

Appreciate any practical assistance available. Thanks in advance.
