Found how to get to the Wipe option: Options > Security Options > General Settings > menu button > Wipe Handheld

The funny characters seem to come from an add-in I use in Outlook (Agendus). No idea why they showed up all of a sudden.

The only way I found to wipe the 8520 clean, remove those characters in Contacts in Outlook through its native UI and Agendus', and resync.
