Default Bold is a flashlight!

Hi All...

Need some help please!!!

The LCD screen on my wife's blackberry bold 9900, just 5 months old, appears to have fried. When powered on, the lcd screen is on super bright...it makes a great flashlight. It wasn't dropped, didn't get wet, nothing. It was sitting on the table beside her working fine one second, then not working the next. We tried doing a battery pull, leaving it out for 5 minutes, but it still is just the screen is still super bright. The phone itself does work as you can hear messages coming in and it rings when called...you just can't see the screen!

We went to our vendor where we bought it, MTS. They verified no water damage, and they would replace it with a new one, however, they would need to send the damaged one in for repair, and they would require our credit card number. If the problem was deemed to be user fault, they would charge our credit card $500.00 for a new bold...no explanations, nothing. We declined that offer, as there is no way we are going to provide our credit card number to just charge without getting some idea as to what was wrong with the phone, especially when we have not damaged it and it is under warranty.

In the meantime, MTS have sent us a curve as replacement. We would really like to get a new bold, or this one repaired at least. I could replace the LCD screen, or at least take it apart to see if the cable has come loose, etc, but it is still under warranty...

Is this normal process when these phone break, especially during warranty period?
