The unit is a simple cell service device and as such requires it's own SIM card from the provider. You did not indicate you have seperate cell service for the unit or that if you do, it is unlocked for the carrier you have.
The Sierra site indicates the unit requires an unlock code from the carrier.
I have one with ATT and it does work well.
