Thanks much for your reply. I do have an active plan with AT&T. It is not a tower problem as the issues do not correct when I travel to other parts of town/to different towers. I will do a battery pull now, as you suggest. I do not know the meaning of Service Books - I will try now to learn what that means. I will get the trackpad issue addressed under warranty.
