HELP! Please and thank you.

Hello most intelligent technologically savvy Blackberry owners,

Cave woman here. I have a second hand Blackberry Pearl given to me by a relative. It has what I am assuming are 2 Rogers Sim Cards with it. It is a foreign object to me. I have plugged in the device and a small red light flashed momentarily in the top right hand corner, but there is no other indication that it is charging. How can I tell if the battery is still good? I believe it is still a working unit, as the relative was simply upgrading to an iphone.

I have no idea how to activate this puppy or whether it is worth activating at all. I will be using it to talk and text, no internet. Is this worth using or is it just as cost effective to buy basic phone? If it's worth activating, I have no idea how to do this. Any advice would be much appreciated.
