I don't think there is anyone here that can help you. Even if someone knew the problem, I suspect it is an issue with RIM or with one or both carriers that you yourself can't do anything about. My advice is do whatever you can to escalate the problem with your carrier.
Just FYI, I have seen weird things on the T-Mobile support forums, problems one person is having that no one else is having, and none of the usual troubleshooting steps solve. It gets bumped up at T-Mobile and eventually gets fixed somehow on the network side. These are strange problems of the sort you have. Just FYI. Talk to your service provider and have your friend do the same with their carrier, and be polite but firm.
