What errror messages if any are you seeing (exact wording)

Have you tried turning content protection off? If you have and you see a lock icon and you are unabe to set it to off or disabled, then likely you have an IT policy on the device.

If you acquired the device used and have found it has an IT policy, you can remove it. Search. If it is your employer's BlackBerry and your employer put an IT policy on it, forgetaboutit, don't go there.
