I follow your instructions and I see a HUGE difference in performance. When connecting to the ISP APN I was getting dialup speeds via my 8700c on the Edge network. Now that I connect using the WAP APN I get the Edge speeds. I'm blown away by the performance increase. This is sweet! If any of you are using your 8700 for a modem make sure to use the WAP APN for it delivers the true Edge performance.
