I have noticed the slow response as well, but only in the Agenda view. I have changed my default view to day and find it MUCH faster. This, combined with Mark's suggestion about rapid navigation using Alt + scroll wheel makes the calendar a useful, fast tool.
I still keep my Ipaq with me, but I find the BB to be my primary tool.
