the MOD helps the highs and MIDS come out of the back of the phone i have drilled many holes in mine not caring about looks because I care about hearing my phone ring and emails come in. I live in NYC where its loud every place I think RIM should have done this MOD for us or atleast make after market back covers that have them pre drilled so if we want we can just snap it in place.
