Default Why one might need to do a non-OTA install of gmail app - 12-15-2006, 12:32 AM

I originally composed this with nice links to everything, but apparently that's a no-go. So, wish I could be more helpful but...

My situation might help clarify: I live in Beijing and there is no way to get personal BB data service (yes, roaming works if you have a plan elsewhere and you can get a corporate BES setup thats quite spendy, but that's it). So I use a 7290 with a vanilla GPRS-enabled sim. It has lowercase "gprs" access, but no default browser appears because there are no service book entries, etc.

So, I use Opera Mmini on the cmnet wap connection and it's great. But I can't install the gmail app through Opera because it wants to use my BB browser to do the actual download (Opera doesn't reveal device type, I gather). When the browser comes up, it says the predictable: no service book entries, etc.

I've tried a number of different methods to get it installed including one found on this forum: 762-howto-manually-convert-jad-jar-cod-if-you-cant-do-ota.
But I keep getting errors after install. I suspect it is because I am using the Geneneric file from gmail.com: .../app/v1.0.0/en/gm-Generic-Advanced_MIDP2.jad
Instead of the one made for my device. But I can't for the life of me find a directory listing for .../app/v.1.0.0/en/ or the filename of the actual .JAD that I need. I've tried changing my browser User Agent to mimic my device, with no luck. Simulator is up next.
Basically: .../app/v1.0.0/en/I_need_This_For_7290.jad

So, If anyone can do the OTA install on their 7290 and tell me what the file name is that it prompts you to download, I'd be grateful. Or if you can figure out how to see the directory contents...

Of course, I don't even know if this will work given the browser/data plan situation, but the SHAPE services GMail Mobile app does work fine. It's an OK program but it looks like the official gmail app is better, and I don't feel like paying 20 bucks when there is a free solution.
Cheers. Drew
