Blackberry data plans are offered by carriers that offer Blackberries because they are required (though I can see why people would suspect that they're just revenue boosters). Your Blackberry must be able to access the Blackberry APN for any data services. Once connected and registered, service books will be automatically pushed to your Blackberry. These service books perform the configuration of your Blackberry for web, email, etc. A non-Blackberry data plan does not provide Blackberry APN access.
