For me, the only downsides to the WM device (MDA II) was battery life and it was bulky. Instant email is nice, but having my WM device check email automatically every 15 minutes worked for me. Actually, when it checked email it would turn on and depending on what was in my pocket hitting the screen, it would be dialing or launching a program every so often. I did have to reset it more frequently too, probably once a week.
