Not sure what all this is about, but all I did with my ThinkPad T40 was to install Desktop Manager from the CD that came with the Pearl [in Sept 2006] and then set up a dial-up/modem connection per the original instructions.

Plugged in the Pearl, pressed "dial" or "connect" and it gave me 115k first thing.

I recently had put in an 80GB hard disk on the ThinkPad and installed drivers manually rather than from an install or rescue disk. Also did all the updates to Windows XP.
