Another thing I noticed while flying. I use Holux and I have to get the satellites before I get on the plane. For some reason if I don't have the satellites' position fixed there is no way to do it while flying. So I get the position fixed before I enter the plane and then I don't turn off my Holux.

GPS receivers need a stronger signal to aquire the satellites than to maintain them. One of the curious things about the Phase Locked Loop circuits used to sync the GPS receiver to the satellite frequency is that once locked, the signal can actually drop below the noise level and not only remain locked, but still produce usable data. For this reason, PLLs are widely used in electronic circuits.
