For ripping the DVD's I use either DVDFab or DVDShrink. Both are free. Once the DVD is ripped I then use a program I had for my PSP to convert it over to MP4. You can use the free BB converter app to make it useable on the Pearl. For ripping from DVD though I like DVDFab. It is simple and works great with all of the disks (including Sony) and updates itself whenever it is needed.
