IMAP is unnecessary. Have you tried Gmail's "recent" mode? It's made to handle this per Gmail's instructions at: How should I use POP on mobile or multiple devices?
If you sign in to Gmail using your Blackberry, you're signed in to recent mode automatically. For all other POP clients, replace 'firstname.lastname@example.org' in your POP client settings with 'recent:email@example.com'.
I do this on Microsoft Entourage on my Mac and Mozilla Thunderbird on my laptop PC, and I can happily check email from either programs, the Gmail web site, or my BlackBerry and it all works fine with everything seeing all emails without issue.
