There's several ways to get internet access on a Blackberry device...
1. WAP Browser - connects using a WAP gateway. Does not require MDS
2. Blackberry Browser - connects using the BES/MDS feature
3. Internet Browser- connects to the Blackberry Internet Service (BIS) which is hosted by RIM or some other provider. This does not require the use of a BES
