It sounds more to me like you had lost the GPS signal so it wasn't tacking and adding any new points, then it picked it up again suddenly and the scale jumped because you had moved so far. I tried this out on a plane once and it updated a little spotty. I also found that the 8800 has a limitation on what altitude it could report.
