I also have a real 6GB Sandisk and same thing happened! Initially showed 5gb and when I formatted it on 8830, only 1.68gb available. Then tried to format on PC and still only 1.68gb available. This was at suggestion of Sandisk techs. Can't even get the card to format to 6gb on a PC! Have tried XP and Vista. Using FAT (not FAT32). How did you get your card to format on PC back up to full storage volume?
