Stand alone GPS appds are NOT free.
You have to purchase the app, which also covers the cost of the maps. Then you have to upgrade on a near-yearly basis to get the updated maps. Apps like TomTom and iGuidance will cost you over $100 per year to keep up to date. And the 'new' maps are always behind the times.
With a subscription based service, your maps are always as up to date as possible, and it does not work out to be more expensive. The only main difference is the data costs.
