Default Empower and the Verizon BB 8830

Verizon BB 8830 OS Ver 4.2.2

I am a relatively new 8830 user and have recently installed and uninstalled BBSmart e-mail viewer due to the frequent appearance of an "uncaught exception ..." error message that resulted in a lock-up of the e-mail and message icons for a period of time. Removing the program has resolved the issue.

I am about to purchase Empower Pro and wonder if any of the more experienced 8800 series users have noted any problems similar to the one described above?

Additionally, the Empower website seems to imply that the software should be obtained "on air" but there is no mention of how said software is to be billed. Does it require the entry of one's credit card information over the wireless network or is there some other means of accomplishing the task.
