The RIM engineer indicated to me that the behavior is normally caused by keeping the phone in your pocket (and having the trackball constantly pressed in on certain occasions) or getting the device wet. While I've never got mine completely wet, I take it snowboarding with me and it does get the occasional snow flake on it when I'm using it in the snow. I also carry it extensively in my pocket.

While I understand how these two issues might cause damage to the sensor behind the trackball, Ixxx8217;m not paying $400 for a phone that I canxxx8217;t carry in my pocket.
