The people who first started publishing this rumor (as well as the ones about the 8500, etc) based this information on domain names purchased a couple years ago by RIM, nothing more. It has since spread from that to people having 'confirmed, concrete evidence' that it will be the 8900. There may be something internal called the 8900, but there will not be public device that will be called that. The next new device from RIM, aside from the CDMA-based 8330, will be the 9000. This one currently has OS 4.6.0.x (it was at .4 the last I heard, which I presume to be fairly new).
