Default Veteran Domino BES admins - please read

Lately my management has been expressing concern with the quality of their BES experience. Most of their complaints have to do with the amount of time it takes to reflect changes from their Notes client to their BB device, specifically with deletions and/or reading emails, which could take up to an hour at times. What things should I verify and/or change before telling them that's just the way it has to be?

Many of our users have several folders in their mail file and don't like to delete their emails, one reason for our 60 day purge policy. If the user files or deletes an email from Notes, would the number of documents and/or size of the mail file impact the time of the reconcile process?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Domino 6.5.6 FP1 (no cluster or replica's)
Dual 2.8 Ghz, 3 Gig
BES 4.1.4 MR1
90 BB users most w/ 8830's
