One problem with this is that BBConnect is not available for a lot of devices. However, it's certainly worth a look.

The only GSM compatible network in Japan is 2100MHz UMTS (3G). The Blackberry 8707 was recently introduced in Japan, which works on that network, but only works on the old GPRS network (very slow) on U.S. frequencies. Further, nobody sells it here, so it would be eBay or something of that sort. The Tilt has Tri-band UMTS (2100, 1900 and 850MHz), so it operates at 3G in nearly every country on Earth.
