SMS will work fine without any kind of data plan.

And.. Yes the phone will be crippled to a certain extent without a BB data plan, however it will still work fine as regular phone, pda, sms messaging and web browsing with Opera Mini. It just boils down a personal preference, what works for you may not work for someone else and vice versa.
