OK, define "unlock"?

Is a unlock, is a unlock, is a unlock???

Another words, is there a partial unlock?, selective unlock?, or only a complete "unlock"?

I've requested an unlock from my company for International travel. Which I expect to receive this week prior to travel next week. What will I get?

Do I have to exchange the SIM to access International cell zones?

Will I have access to additional local providers with an unlock giving me perhaps more signal strength locally without changing the SIM?

Again, what should I expect?
